Choosing lingerie for a Boudoir photoshoot isn’t some great unsolved mystery. However, it does require technique and knowledge. With that in mind, after 10 years of photographing women, I developed an ideal approach to selecting outfits.
Thinking about doing a Boudoir photoshoot but have no idea what to wear? I’ve got you covered, friend. Take these tips:
In this article, we’ll cover the following topics:
- What flatters your body
- Lingerie styles for sensual photoshoots
- The importance of lingerie colors and textures in your photoshoot
- The magic of details—or their absenceHow to choose a good photographer for your sensual photoshoot
Bonus: How about trying something different?
1. Find What Flatters Your Body
After photographing more than 600 women, I’ve never seen two exactly alike. Women’s bodies are wonderfully diverse, and each one is unique. For this reason, every photoshoot requires a personalized approach to highlight each woman’s curves.
Therefore, every lingerie choice for a sensual photoshoot will be unique.
To help you figure out what works for you, here are five common body shapes and tips for each:
Inverted Triangle: Focus on accentuating the legs and keep the arms free.
Hourglass: Choose pieces that define or expose your waist.
Rectangle: Highlight your waist and opt for details around the hips and bust.
Oval: Go for straight cuts around the hips and define your waistline. Avoid covering your neckline and arms.
Triangle (Pear): Add attention-grabbing details to the upper body.
2. Lingerie Styles for Sensual Photoshoots
There aren’t many strict rules when it comes to lingerie styles for sensual photoshoots. Once you know what suits you, you’re free to experiment. However, there are a few key points to keep in mind.
Bra Styles:
The most important factor is choosing a bra that doesn’t distort your natural shape. The bra should complement the overall look. In the studio, I increasingly prefer non-padded bras to preserve the natural curves of each woman.
So, don’t worry if you have a small bust; the angle of the photo makes all the difference. Choose a bra that enhances your shape without squeezing or distorting it.
Panty Styles:
Opt for seamless panties, as seams on the edges can dig into your legs and waist. The ideal seam is a vertical one down the center, which adds depth without altering your curves.
One-Piece Outfits:
I have to admit—I love bodysuits! They’re incredible pieces that suit almost everyone. Bodysuits are both elegant and modest, without overexposing the body.
Similarly, corsets are a classic choice for sensual photoshoots. When well-fitted without altering your silhouette, they look incredibly sexy.
Nightgowns add a romantic vibe, which is perfect if that’s your style. Garter belts, however, require more attention to fit—if they’re not the right size, they can dig into or distort your curves.
Robes are another fail-safe option. The best ones are lightweight and semi-transparent, creating beautiful contours and depth in photos.
3. Colors and Textures in Lingerie for Boudoir Photoshoots
I always tell my clients that one of the most crucial elements is the color palette. By coordinating colors, we create a cohesive look without risking a scattered or chaotic vibe.
Colors set the mood. As a photographer, I prefer timeless tones that never go out of style. I tend to avoid bold prints for the same reason.
Fabrics also play a significant role. They add richness to the look. You don’t need the most expensive fabric, but it’s worth investing in something of decent quality.
Well-draped, soft-touch fabrics make a surprising difference in photos. Photography captures even the smallest textures and sensations.
So, when choosing lingerie for your Boudoir photoshoot, try on different pieces, feel the fabrics, and fall in love with the process. Remember, this is a unique experience that will stay with you forever.
4. The Magic is in the Details—or Their Absence
Over the past 10 years, I’ve eliminated anything unnecessary from Boudoir photoshoots—overly bold prints, excessive embroidery, and too many colors in one piece.
Subtle touches make all the difference; there’s no need to overdo it.
That’s why I always lean towards minimalism. As a photographer, I believe you should be the star of the photoshoot. Nothing should steal your spotlight.
Create only one or two focal points in your outfit—because all the sparkle should come from you!
5. Choose a Good Professional for Your Boudoir Photoshoot
A perfect photoshoot that becomes a lasting memory of you and your story needs to be thoughtfully planned and executed.
A good professional will guide you through every detail—what to wear, what to avoid, and how to achieve the best effects for each photo.
Remember: photography is serious business. It lasts forever. And it has the potential to be one of the best memories of your life. So, make sure to choose the best professional—you deserve it!
Bonus: How About Trying Something Different in Your Sensual Photoshoot?
Maybe this is just what your photoshoot needs—that little extra touch that’s uniquely you.
With that in mind, I’ve increasingly included unconventional pieces in photoshoots. Items that aren’t typically considered sensual but, when styled correctly, look amazing.
Here are some ideas:
- A long skirt with slits
- That bodysuit you bought for a party (here it is again!) or a chic swimsuit
3. A fine, well-draped shirt
4. Denim shorts (always in style, right?) paired with a simple top
5. Dresses! Who doesn’t love them?
6. Or… go with nothing at all! Add some statement earrings, and you’re good to go 🙂
That artistic nude style, where the nudity isn’t explicit but tastefully implied.
Did you like it?
This is just the basics of what I’ve observed in my daily work with sensual photoshoots. Over the past 10 years, I’ve developed my own techniques for capturing and producing stunning sensual portraits. By 2018, more than 600 women had stepped into my studio. Cheers to that!
