“Imprisoned and Illuminated”

“When a prisoner is placed in solitary confinement, they are forced into the absence of light — as if returning to a womb-like darkness. Deprived of their primal innocence, they are compelled to confront an agitated introspection within their adult mind.

A mother gives light, catapulting her tender, urgent child into life under naked eyes. When I walked through the former public jail of Tiradentes, I saw in that solitary cell the possibility of embracing the non-light to create an exercise of gradual reconquest of luminosity — as a daily cosmic gift.

A slit, an orifice, a curtain, a diaphragm — and a group of people in their frank nakedness, dressed or not, waiting for the bath of rays that would reveal their bodies and offer them to photographic records, sharing their gazes and thoughts.

A workshop is a space for repairs — for noticing one another, for understanding how each individual translates their personal vision of a shared theme. It is a Chamber of Revelations, like a City Council (Câmara de Vereadores) that legislates on how to live together and pursue collective goals.

In that luminous Tiradentes, we gathered the scattered pieces of the dismembered body of the Mineiro martyr to regenerate free bodies.”
